What we expect from a modding site
on: July 20, 2012, 01:49:11 PM

Hello Blizzmodders:

Seeing the recent situations with other sites like the user mass banning at Hive and the inactivity of WC3C.NET, I'd like to start a thread where we can have a talk about what users want to have and what is expected from a modding community site.

In order to make it productive, I'll start with these questions:

  • What are the aspects that make a modding site a good one?
  • What are the aspects that make a modding site a bad one?
  • Based on your experience, what kind of behavior or attitudes from the staff should be avoided in a modding site?
  • What kind of features should be implemented in a modding site?
  • What would you like to see in this community in order to make you feel at home?

With this we plan to improve our rules and protocols. I'm looking forward for a site that gives to the users a good space to share and promote their stuff, where they feel confident and comfortable. It's important to keep in mind this: any community is alive for the users, and if the community staff acts against this precept, it's condemned to disappear.

Thanks for your comments :)

EDIT:

A code to answer the questions properly without losing :)

1.) Easy access to our resources (models, skins, icons) and tutorials to help map makers and newbies on their projects.
2.) For me, a modding community becomes bad if the community itself don't talk and help each other.
3.) For me its the mod becoming hubris after he gets the moderating power, means at start he helps or submit resources, but after he get the power, he stop helping users and stop submitting his resources and become a abuser of power.
4.) For me the site have some great features, might not be original but the  execution is a lot better than the other site. I also like that you can see your post count on your submitted resources etc etc. Maybe, just maybe add a shoutbox, since our chat room is dead silent at the moment.
5.) I want to see this community to become active and helpful to everybody, newbs and pro should help each other.

Ok, my point of view:

  • A modding site will be good if you feel supported by the community members, if you find your questions answered and if you find good resources to use
  • When the staff forget that they were users before moderators. When the staff pretends to impose things because they believe it's right, without consulting their ideas with the community. Ina nutshell: not being democratic
  • In my opinion, WC3C.net died because the site owner left the site and the life of it ended depending on the activity of site directors. They were active, but their ego overwhelmed the users, making feel them not worthy to the site. You submit something there, and you'll receive critics with imposition of systems from the directors, nothing outside from the stuff in wc3c is accepted, new ideas are dished, you must think strictly like them or you're not accepted. They believe they have the last word and at the end they don't.

About the Hive, they were friendlier, and that was a success, they're more receptive to new ideas, at least they try and test new stuff, they were more community. But the fear of losing control and the lost of confidence in the staff made the site fall apart. I have the feeling that Ralle wants to change drastically the site purpose and this was a "necessary lost". At the end, the staff believes the site is for the staff, and forgot that a site is for the users, and they have reacted in concordance.

Said this, we must avoid to impose things different from a conduct code, we must be opened to new solutions, imposing standards just because we think they're fine without consulting the community is a very bad idea. Being elitist is very bad too.
  • Easy search, hosting capabilities and community support is very important. Kindness in all the aspects with clear conduct rules are a key factor too.
  • In this part I'm open to suggestions :)

1. Active and friendly community. I also want equality and a proper social "government" if you would say.
2. Abusing power, flaming, noob-hating, social/forum standings. Staffs should still remember that they are users, just with more privileges.
3. Abusing power, as stated above. I also particularly hate mods who downgrade users with like 10 rejected resources and assumes it is of "crappy" quality, resulting a rejection. In short, being judge-mental or very judging/stereotype.

The staff should also address the community. If there were plans for promotion of a user - address the community. A new feature? Ask the community their thoughts. Demotion/ban? Ask the community.
4. Government. So people would know what they need to know and not know what they dont need to know.
5. Active, friendly and helpful. No social/forum standings, where high rep or old users dominate.

And jay, your #3 is can be justified. Staff = more power. More power = more responsibilities. He could have lesser time to submit personal works due to him moderating a particular area.

let's call people to participate in this site. From my part, I'll try to add new tutorials of my own. WE should try to do the same in this aspect too.

I totally agree.

3.) For me its the mod becoming hubris after he gets the moderating power, means at start he helps or submit resources, but after he get the power, he stop helping users and stop submitting his resources and become a abuser of power.
Totally agree, that was the stabbing knife that is killing wc3c. They know a lot!!!they created tools and techniques, but that doesn't make them the last word in this knowledge field. There's more people with good ideas and they don't have the right to impose to people a specific way to do the things, mainly in coding. Additionally they shouldn't forget they were users, they did that, and the site lost.

Have you mentioned shoutbox??? Ok, you'll get it :) check below...

I share your opinion, let's call more people here :)

That has been a common fault in both wc3c and THW.

4. Government. So people would know what they need to know and not know what they dont need to know.
I agree, but we should remind to not to impose something to any user unless it implies the community benefit, which should be consulted directly to them or measured via karma.

So no facebook style?? ok.

Here I was thinking in changing a little bit the staff role. We should set a moderator as a guy who has to solve issues with visualization resources and as official tester. But the community will give the opinion about the usefulness of any resource via rating, moderators should not be the last word about any resource.

Everything needs changes, and there are two types of changes, a bad one and a good one, we want the good one.

And those changes will come when people give the suggestions. We start with a proposal, the community gives the opinion.

I expect staff members who are committed to the site as life allows them. I agree with many of the points above especially ones pertaining to abuse of power. The Hive suffered from that for a very long time.

I have asked Moyack this already but, I want to ask a more general version. What staff do we have? Do we need to try to find users from other sites that might be potential staff members?

I believe we must first make this site active, we have enough people to handle things here.

Moyack and Mag = Both are great coders and surely can help newbies and pros.
Sublime = Can handle lots of organizing and other stuffs for the site.
Me = Have a experience on being a moderator for a huge WC3 forum.
Klayton = A great 3D artist that can surely handle things on the model section.

ATM we have this following stuffs:
Moyack - Site Ownder
Sublime and SonofJay - Director
Mag - Global Moderator
Klayton - Model Moderator

but if the site becomes larger we will sure need to have more staffs handling specific sections.

1. A section where a user can download/upload 3ds, obj, skp, fbx, mdx, mdl, blend, dae, md2, md3, kmz, gmax, max model file type. I have noticed that .mdx file type cannot be uploaded here unless it is zipped or in rar. You can actually manage the extensions in your administrator control panel so that every model file type can be uploaded here.

Good to see you. Question: Whats does other modding sites do horribly bad?
By asking that question we get whats bad on modding sites and improve from that point, then we shall just follow what they do good.

About slime's question.

Some stuffs that comes to my mind that makes browsing a forum hard is making too much sub-forums that even though admins or some users think it makes browsing simple it actually complicates a lot of things and sometimes it makes users who have crappy connection really unhappy.

Also cheesy forum is a big no no, I mean rainbow background, gay banners and such is a real pain on user's eyes.
